Professor of Geography at the UAB, Marc Parés, presented the preliminary results of his research project “Articulating Sovereignties: New Forms of Multiscalar Governance for the Major Challenges of Contemporary Society” in a seminar held at Palau Macaya. This project was awarded by the Foundation as part of the 2024 Pasqual Maragall Legacy Awards, and throughout 2025 he has carried out the research, which is now in its final phase.
Marc Parés’ work seeks to rethink the concept of sovereignty in today’s globalised context — a context in which most collective problems and challenges have a global nature but local causes and consequences, while the dominant political structures designed to address them continue to be based on the idea of the nation-state.
The aim of the seminar was to share the project’s preliminary findings and to discuss some of the proposals put forward as its conclusions. To do so, a dozen specialists in the field were invited — academics from Geography, Political Science and Law, as well as professionals, activists and public?sector officials from the three areas of study. The session also featured a guest lecture by Ximo Farinós, Professor of Geography at the University of Valencia.
